This is in contrast to only 10% of businesses expecting to increase pay above the rate of inflation.

New research from Grant Thornton International reveals that women still hold less than a quarter of senior management positions in privately held businesses globally. 24% of senior management positions are currently held by women - a figure identical to 2007 and only a marginal improvement from 2004 when only 19% of senior level positions were held by women. 34% of privately held businesses globally have no women in senior management.

Despite the economic downturn, privately held businesses (PHBs) remain surprisingly resilient in their attitude towards acquisitions, according to research from the Grant Thornton International Business Report. 37% of PHBs globally still plan an acquisition in the next three years, a drop of only 7% from the same study in 2008. Of that 37%, the proportion planning to transact cross-border has actually increased, suggesting that international mergers and acquisitions remain on the agenda as a strategic tool to drive growth.

Latest research from the annual Grant Thornton International Business Report offers new insight about how far into the future privately held businesses (PHBs) plan. The most common planning period is 1-3 years, favoured by 49% of PHBs globally. However, PHBs in mainland China are the longest term planners with 44% of businesses planning more than three years ahead. Of PHBs following a 1-3 year planning cycle, the highest proportions were in Denmark (64%), followed by New Zealand and the United Kingdom (both 60%) and India and Greece (both 59%).

When 7,200 PHBs were asked to identify the initiative that helped profitability most, 20% cited innovation followed by cost cutting (18%) and pricing strategy (13%).

Despite the global downturn, plenty of privately held businesses (PHBs) are still prepared to introduce 'green' practices, according to latest research from the Grant Thornton International Business Report (IBR) - even if those green practices have a negative effect on the bottom line.
When asked to rate the environmental friendliness of their business community and their appetite for introducing green practices, the 7,200 senior executives in PHBs across 36 economies created a global picture of those prepared to take the initiative on green practices and those unwilling to put their bottom line at risk.

Grant Thornton International has donated a further US$36,610 to UNICEF. The global accounting organisation donates US$5 to UNICEF for every completed questionnaire for its International Business Report (IBR).
IBR is an annual survey of the views of senior executives in privately held businesses (PHBs) all over the world.

Research from the annual Grant Thornton International Business Report shows that privately held businesses (PHBs) are looking for stability and transparency from their tax systems. The survey reveals that taxes on business profits are seen as the most burdensome domestic tax by 27% of privately held businesses (PHBs) globally, this is a slight increase on last year's response (24%). Employment related taxes (20%) and personal income tax (19%) come a close second and third.

Optimism amongst privately held businesses (PHBs) around the world has bounced back to give the Grant Thornton global optimism/pessimism index for 2010 an optimism balance of +24%, compared to its lowest ever score of -16% this time last year. The International Business Report (IBR) survey of over 7,400 PHBs across 36 economies, now in its 18th year, also highlights a group of ten economies where businesses are more optimistic about the outlook for their economies than International Monetary Fund (IMF) forecasts might suggest.

More evidence that the global credit crunch is easing comes from the latest Grant Thornton International Business Report (IBR) which reveals that privately held businesses (PHBs) around the world are increasingly confident that access to finance will be easier in 2010. 35% of businesses said they thought access to finance would be 'more' or 'much more accessible' in 2010 compared with only 14% who were similarly positive 12 months ago.
